Ensuring that the Indigenous people of Guyana are involved in the development of the FLEGT /VPA

The need for ensuring more meaningful participation of indigenous peoples in the FLEGT VPA discussions in Guyana, the Amerindian Peoples Association and the Forest Peoples Programme have undertaken a project funded by the European Union for non-state actors. The purpose of the project is “Ensuring that the Indigenous people of Guyana are involved in the development of the FLEGT /VPA.”

Over a period of two years, the APA and FPP’s project “Enabling the participation of Indigenous Peoples in the FLEGT VPA process” will seek to achieve the following objectives through several activities:

• Building capacity and awareness of the Amerindian people with regards to FLEGT; stressing the importance of sharing information with community member and not to keep it to themselves.
• Enable participation of indigenous people considering FLEGT
• Promote FLEGT in relation to Guyana’s international obligations on indigenous rights
